A. The State Tretyakov Gallery displays the largest and most interesting collections of Russian fine art. It contains more than 180,000 artifacts, amazing in their diversity. They range from the priceless Andrei Rublev’s icons to Black Square by Kazimir Malevich. Visitors can also see works of Socialist Realism. The sculptures in that style are located on the sites of the nearby museums that belong to the gallery too.

B. The Tretyakov Gallery is located in the central historical part of Moscow. The gallery building is a real work of art! It is built in Russian fairy tale style and belonged to Pavel Tretyakov, the founder of the gallery. The central facade of the building dates from 1902–1904. It was designed by the famous Russian artist Victor Vasnetsov. It was not the artist’s first ‘fairy tale’ architectural project but, according to critics, it was the best one.

C. A large share of the treasures of the gallery was collected by Pavel Tretyakov. He was a merchant and the owner of a big textile business. At the age of 18, Pavel Tretyakov inherited part of the family business and money from his father. With that money he bought the first pictures that started his huge collection. Pavel Tretyakov continued buying the best Russian art works all over the country. He also supported talented artists and sponsored numerous
artists societies.

D. The Tretyakov Gallery is an extremely popular tourist attraction. It is conveniently located in the historical centre of the city, in Lavrushenskiy Pereulok. The gallery can be easily reached by Metro – the Metro stations Polyanka, Novoslobodskaya, and Tretyakovskaya are really very close to the place. To avoid a long line to enter, buying tickets online is strongly
recommended.

E. When he was a very young man, Pavel Tretyakov set an aim to create an art gallery. At first, he planned it to be a private collection. Then he decided to give his arts collection and the house where it was kept to Moscow. Pavel Tretyakov wanted his private collection to become a public gallery. The official ceremony of the opening of Pavel and Sergei Tretyakov City art gallery took place on August 15, 1893. Sergei was Pavel’s brother who
contributed a lot to the collection.

F. The State Tretyakov Gallery is a top landmark of Moscow. It has been welcoming a great number of visitors since its opening in 1893. There were times, however, when the flow of people was restricted or stopped. Thus, during the Great Patriotic War, the largest part of the collection was carefully packed and evacuated to Novosibirsk. The gallery building was damaged during the enemy's bombing. The first exhibition after the war took place in
May 1945, very soon after Victory Day.
