Hi guys!
This post differs from all the previous posts in my blog. I’m not going to give you any trip advice or recommend hotels for staying in. This blog is totally about my trip to Chile. I came back home to Canada a few days ago, but I can’t say I’ve switched back to my normal routine. Gosh, everything around looks so dull and boring!
In fact, I went to Chile to write about tourist activities available there. By chance, I heard about a kayaking school and decided to see it. However, it was not easy to find. The so-called kayaking village, where the school was registered, was empty. A man told me to look for the students and teachers down the river and offered his services as a guide.
I felt surprised but that was nothing compared to the amazement I felt when we found the school at last. It was not an extreme sports school for tourists as I had expected. It was a normal school for children from 10 to 15 years old, where they learned all the usual subjects like mathematics, physics, languages and others too. They also learned how to cook, take photos and make films. I was a professional blogger, twice as old as them, but they taught me some really useful tricks!
All the students spoke pretty good English, though they were of different origins and mother tongues. Of course, the school sport was kayaking.
My definition as a normal school above was probably not a good word choice. The school was not normal in many ways and it was constantly moving! The children had their classes in the morning, usually outside, in small groups of four or five. In the early afternoon they and their teachers travelled to another place down the river. In the early evening they set up a camp and stayed there for a night. Some evenings the students and teachers had fun contests and competitions – it looked like they were enjoying their life! And in the morning they ‘went to school’ again.
Needless to say, all the students observed the safety rules. When kayaking, they always wore safety vests and their phones were always charged. The kids kept them in special waterproof pockets on their clothes.
The teachers at the school were different ages but all of them were fit and healthy. They also seemed to enjoy the kayaking lifestyle, though some of them confessed it was not easy for them. Most of the teachers had not had any sports backgrounds and were learning sports skills together with their students, under the supervision of the kayaking instructor.
In my next post I’ll write more about that remarkable school. Feel free to ask questions so that I can give you all the details you want to know.
