The red colour comes from the red dust on the surface of the planet. Mars is a fairly small planet, about one-half the size of Earth. Its north and south poles are covered with ice and snow. Mars has volcanoes, mountains, canyons, and craters. There are strange lines on the surface of Mars that some scientists think may be old riverbeds. Mars has two small moons. The larger moon is only 14 miles across. The smaller one is only 8 miles across. Spacecrafts have been sent to Mars to take pictures and collect soil samples. |
