The Boston Post Road is the oldest road in the United States. It is more than 300 years old. Colonists made the road in the 1670s, more than 100 years before the American Revolution. This is why even now some parts of the road are called King’s Highway. The road followed old Native American trails and was built because the colonists needed a way to carry mail and messages between two growing cities – Boston and New York. At first, only post riders were used for that. Later, when the road became wider and safer, it was possible to use horse-drawn wagons. In some towns today, the area around the Boston Post Road has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. |
