Polar bears live in very cold places. In some areas where they live, the temperatures drop far below zero. But polar bears still stay warm and survive. How do they do that? There are two things that polar bears have that protect them from extreme cold – their thick fur and their fat. Polar bears have two layers of fur, a long and oily layer and a short and protective layer. The hairs of both types of fur are hollow. They trap hot air and bring it close to the bear’s skin. The fur keeps the bear dry and warm while hunting in the water. The polar bear’s fat is 5 to 10 cm thick and is spread throughout most of its body. Not only does it keep the bear warm, but it also helps the bear float in the water.
